What is the Embden Town House?
The Embden Town House is a historic building in Embden, Maine. It sits in a clear area next to Cross Town Road. This building is made of wood and has one floor. It has a special roof shape called a "side gable roof." The outside walls are covered with wooden boards.
How Does the Building Look?
The front of the building faces southeast. It has five sections, with the main door in the middle. There are four windows with shutters that can open and close. The sides of the building each have one window. The back wall is a bit different. It has a small outhouse built onto one corner. There are also three windows on the back. The building has simple decorations around the roofline.
What's Inside the Town House?
The inside of the Embden Town House has not changed much over the years. The walls are covered with plaster. There are also wooden panels on the lower part of the walls. Some of these panels have very old paint on them!
Benches are placed along three of the walls. In the middle of the back wall, there is a special area. This area has a podium and seats for the town's leaders, called selectmen. There used to be voting booths attached to one wall. The wooden ceiling was added later, in the 1900s.
History of the Embden Town House
Embden was first settled by people in 1779. It officially became a town in 1804. For many years, town meetings were held in people's homes or in school buildings.
When Was the Town House Built?
People started talking about building a special place for town meetings in 1832. But it took a long time for the idea to become real! In 1847, the town finally decided to pay for the building.
The Embden Town House was built in 1848. A builder named Elisha Walker constructed it. He was paid $250.15 for his work. That was a lot of money back then!
How is it Used Today?
The building is still used for town events and meetings. However, it is no longer used as a place for people to vote. The main town offices are now in a newer building. In 1991, the Embden Town House was carefully moved a short distance. It was placed onto a new foundation to keep it safe.
