Her Early Life and Family
Emilie Juliane was the daughter of Count Albert Frederick I and Sophia Ursula. She was born in a difficult time in Germany.
Growing Up During the Thirty Years' War
During a big war called the Thirty Years' War, Emilie's family had to leave their home. They were Lutheran Protestants, and people who shared their faith were sometimes treated badly. They found safety at Heidecksburg castle in Rudolstadt, which belonged to her great-uncle, Count Louis Günther I. Emilie was born there.
Her Education and Adoption
Sadly, Emilie's parents passed away when she was very young. Her aunt, Emilie of Oldenburg, adopted her. Her aunt was also her godmother and was married to her great-uncle.
Emilie grew up in Rudolstadt with her cousins. She received a very good education from teachers like Ahasuerus Fritsch. She studied religion, Latin, history, and other subjects. She is seen as someone who helped start a religious movement focused on a very personal and deep faith.
Her Life as a Hymn Writer
On July 7, 1665, Emilie married her cousin, Count Albert Anton II. He later became the Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.
Writing Many Hymns
Emilie Juliane became one of the most productive German women hymn writers. She wrote almost 600 hymns! Her hymns show a deep love for her Saviour.
Some of her famous hymns include "Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende" (which means "Who knows how near my end is"). This hymn and another one, "Bis hierher hat mich Gott gebracht" (meaning "God has brought me this far"), are still found in the Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch today.
Her Published Works
Emilie Juliane also published several collections of her hymns and other religious writings. These included:
- Geistliche Lieder, etc. (Spiritual Songs), published in Rudolstadt in 1683.
- Kuhlwasser in grosser Hitze des Creutzes (Cool Water in the Great Heat of the Cross), published in Rudolstadt in 1685.
- Tägliches Morgen- Mittags- und Abendopfer (Daily Morning, Midday, and Evening Offering), also published in Rudolstadt in 1685.
