Emma Appleton is an Australian expert who helps design and plan cities. She is a landscape architect and an urban designer. This means she works on making outdoor spaces and whole cities better places for people to live, work, and play. Currently, she is the Director of City Strategy for the City of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. In this important role, she helps guide how the city will grow and change in the future.

Her Education and Learning

Emma Appleton has studied a lot to become an expert in city design. She earned a Master of Urban Design degree from Oxford Brookes University between 2002 and 2003. Before that, she completed a Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture at Queensland University of Technology from 1994 to 1996. Her first degree was a Bachelor of Design Studies in Architecture from The University of Queensland, which she finished in 1994.

She also received a special award called a Churchill Fellowship. This scholarship allowed her to travel and study how old industrial areas in Germany and the Netherlands were being made new and useful again.

Her Career Journey

Emma Appleton has worked in many important jobs in both Australia and the United Kingdom. She has been recognized for her leadership, even being named one of the Top 50 Public Sector Women in Victoria in 2018.

Before joining the City of Melbourne, Emma had other key roles. From 2011 to 2016, she was the Director of the Victorian Design Review Panel. This panel helps make sure new building projects are well-designed. Before that, from 2009 to 2011, she was the Director of Urban Design for projects that rebuilt and improved areas for VicUrban.

Emma also worked in London, UK, at a place called the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE). From 2003 to 2008, she was an advisor and led the urban design and housing teams there. While at CABE, she helped write important guides like 'Creating Successful Neighbourhoods' and 'Creating Successful Masterplans'. These books teach people how to design great communities and large development plans. Earlier in her career, she worked at Gillespies from 1999 to 2002 and at Maroochy Shire Council from 1997 to 1999.

Today, Emma is a Registered Landscape Architect. She also helps guide design courses at universities in Melbourne.
