Emma de la Barra (1861-1947) was an important writer from Argentina. She was also known by her special pen name, César Duáyen. She is most famous for her novels Stella (published in 1905) and Mecha Iturbe (published in 1906). People loved these books because they showed strong, modern women.

Her novel Stella was a huge success. It became the very first best-selling book in Argentina! In 1943, Stella was even made into a movie. The famous actress Zully Moreno played the main character, Stella.

Emma de la Barra was connected to a writing style called Costumbrismo. This style focused on showing the everyday customs and lives of people. Some of her other well-known books include El Manantial (1908), Eleonora (1933), and La dicha de Malena (1943).
