Enbarr facts for kids
The Enbarr (also called Aonbharr) is a special horse from old Irish stories. It belonged to the sea-god Manannán mac Lir. This amazing horse could travel over both land and sea. It was also faster than the wind!
Manannán mac Lir let the hero Lugh Lamh-fada use Enbarr. In a story called Oidheadh Chloinne Tuireann ("The Fate of the Children of Tuireann"), Lugh refused to lend Enbarr to the sons of Tuireann. Instead, he had to lend them a magical boat called Sguaba Tuinne (Wave-sweeper). This boat could steer itself!
Enbarr's Magic in Stories
In the story Oidheadh Chlainne Tuireann, the good people of the Tuatha Dé Danann were having trouble with the Formorians. They gathered for a meeting, and Lugh arrived with his army. Lugh was riding Enbarr, the horse from the "Land of Promise."
Enbarr was incredibly fast, even faster than the cold spring wind. It could travel easily over land or sea. What's more, anyone riding Enbarr could not be killed! Lugh also wore special armor from the sea-god, which made him even safer. Some stories even suggest Enbarr was a beautiful white horse.
Lugh did not want to lend Enbarr to the sons of Tuireann. He said it was like lending something that was already a loan. Because he refused, he ended up having to lend them a magical boat instead. This boat was a type of coracle (a small boat) and was called the "Besom of the Sea" or "Wave-sweeper."
