Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Enchō (延長) was a Japanese era name (nengō). It came after the Engi era and before the Jōhei era. This time period lasted from April 923 to April 931.

During the Enchō era, two emperors ruled Japan. First was Emperor Daigo-tennō (醍醐天皇). After him, Emperor Suzaku-tennō (朱雀天皇) became emperor.

What Was the Enchō Era?

The Enchō era was a period in Japanese history. It was part of the Heian period, a time when Japan's capital was in Heian-kyō (modern-day Kyoto). Eras like Enchō helped people keep track of years. They were often named after good omens or important events.

Key Events During Enchō

Many important things happened during the Enchō era. These events shaped the history of Japan.

The Great Flood of 929

In the year 929 (which was Enchō 7), a terrible disaster struck Japan. Huge floods covered the country. These floods caused a lot of damage. Sadly, many people lost their lives during this time.

Lightning Strikes the Palace

On July 24, 930 (Enchō 8), a powerful lightning bolt hit the Imperial Palace. This was a very shocking event. Several people were killed by the lightning strike. Among them were important figures like Fuijwara no Kiyotsura and Taira no Mareyo.

People at the time believed this lightning strike was not just a natural event. They thought it was an act of revenge. Many believed it was the angry spirit of a famous scholar, Sugawara Michizane. He had been unfairly sent away from the capital years before.

A New Emperor Rises

Later in 930 (Enchō 8), Emperor Daigo became very ill. He had ruled for 34 years. Because he was so sick, his son was chosen to take over. This process of choosing a new ruler is called senso (succession).

Soon after, special ceremonies called sokui were held. These ceremonies officially confirmed Emperor Suzaku as the new monarch. He was now the ruler of Japan.

The End of Emperor Daigo's Reign

Just a few days after his son became emperor, Emperor Daigo passed away. This happened on October 23, 930 (Enchō 8). He was 46 years old when he died. His death marked the end of his long reign and the full beginning of Emperor Suzaku's rule.
