The Engine Company 6 Fire Station is an old firehouse in Hartford, Connecticut. It was built in 1937. This building is a great example of the Moderne style of architecture. It worked as a fire station until 1984. In 1989, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it helps people by serving as a shelter for those without homes.
About the Fire Station Building
The old Engine Company 6 station is in a part of Hartford called Sheldon-Charter Oak. You can find it on the east side of Huyshope Street. It is a two-story building made of brick and brownstone.
The building has a flat roof and a strong foundation. It has three main sections on the front. Two of these sections were for fire trucks. The section on the left has a door for people and windows.
Upstairs, there are rows of three windows in each section. Inside, some of the original parts are still there. However, the sliding pole that firefighters used to quickly get downstairs has been removed.
A Look Back at Its History
Engine Company 6 started way back in 1873. It was first called the Colt Fire Company. This name came from its location near the Colt Armory, a famous factory.
The company's first fire station was an older brick building. Sadly, it was damaged by a big flood in 1936. Because of the damage, the old building had to be torn down.
This new building, the one we see today, was built to replace it. The city's own architects designed it. It looks a bit like another fire station in the city, Engine Company 5, but it has a simpler design.
Engine Company 6 stopped being a fire company in 1984. After that, the building was changed. It became a place where people who don't have homes can find shelter.
