Enid Luff facts for kids
Enid Luff (born February 21, 1935 – died February 19, 2022) was a talented Welsh musician, music teacher, and composer. She created many different kinds of music.
Her Musical Journey
Enid Luff was born in Ebbw Vale, Wales. She learned to play the piano from a young age. She studied at the University of Wales and Cambridge, where she earned a Master of Arts degree.
After taking some time off for her family, she continued her piano studies at the Royal Northern College. She also received a special grant, called a Welsh Arts Council Bursary. This allowed her to learn from famous composers like Elizabeth Lutyens, Anthony Payne, and Franco Donatoni.
Later, Enid Luff lived and worked in London and Birmingham for many years. She taught music at the University School of Continuing Studies. She also started a music publishing company called Primavera with another composer, Julia Usher. Enid Luff lived and composed music in Cardiff until her passing.
What Music Did She Write?
Enid Luff wrote many pieces of music. These include works for solo instruments, small groups of instruments (called chamber ensembles), and voices. Here are some of her selected works:
- 1986: Piano Sonata: "Storm Tide"
- 1989: Sleep, Sleep, February (for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Piano) – a calm and thoughtful piece
- 1992: Listening for the Roar of the Sun (for Solo Oboe, Dancer, Speaker, and Slides)
- 1997: The Glass Wall (for three Dancers, solo Cello, and electronic tape)
- 1997: Studies for the Glass Wall (for solo cello)
- 1999: Telyneg (Lyric for Oboe and Harp)
