Enrique Flórez de Setién y Huidobro (born July 21, 1702 – died August 20, 1773) was an important Spanish historian. He spent his life studying history and writing many books.
A Life of Learning
Enrique Flórez was born in a town called Villadiego, Spain. When he was 15 years old, he joined a religious group called the Order of St. Augustine. This was a common path for smart young people back then.
He became a professor of theology at the University of Alcala. Theology is the study of religious beliefs. While teaching, he wrote a big five-volume book about theology. This showed how dedicated he was to learning.
After this, Flórez decided to focus on history. His first history book was called Clavis Historiae. It was published in 1743. This book was like a guide to history, helping people understand dates and events. It was very popular and reprinted many times.
The Big History Project
Flórez is most famous for his huge work called España Sagrada. This title means "Sacred Spain." It was a massive collection of Spanish church history. The first volume came out in 1747.
This book was read all over Europe. Flórez wrote 29 volumes himself during his lifetime! After he passed away, other historians continued his work. Eventually, the entire series grew to 51 volumes. It was published in Madrid between 1747 and 1886.
The España Sagrada is very valuable. It includes old stories and documents that are hard to find anywhere else. It helps us understand a lot about Spain's past.
Other Important Works
Enrique Flórez was also good at studying old coins. This is called numismatics. He wrote a book called Medallas de Las Colonias in two volumes. A third volume was added later.
His last major work was Memorias de las reynas Catolicas. This means "Memories of the Catholic Queens." It was published in 1770.
Flórez lived a quiet life, focused on his studies. He was not interested in fame or power. He died in Madrid in 1773. His work left a lasting impact on Spanish history.
