Enrique de Aragón y Pimentel was an important Spanish nobleman. He was also known as el Infante Fortuna, which means "the Lucky Prince". Enrique was born in Calatayud on July 25, 1445. He passed away in Castelló d'Empúries on July 2, 1522.
He held important titles during his life. He started as the Count of Ampurias. Later, he became the very first Duke of Segorbe. Enrique also served as the Viceroy of Catalonia from 1479 to 1493. A Viceroy was like a governor, ruling a region for the king.
Enrique's Early Life
Enrique de Aragón y Pimentel was the only son of Henry, Duke of Villena. His mother was Beatriz de Pimentel. Sadly, his father passed away before Enrique was born. This means he was a posthumous son.
When Enrique's uncle, Alfonso V of Aragon, died in 1458, Enrique took over his father's titles. He became the Count of Empúries and Count of Segorbe. His uncle had been looking after these lands for him.
Becoming a Duke and Viceroy
In 1469, something special happened. Enrique's title of Count of Segorbe was made even more important. It was changed into a dukedom. This meant he became the Duke of Segorbe.
Later, in 1479, his cousin Ferdinand II of Aragon became the King of Aragon. King Ferdinand trusted Enrique a lot. He appointed Enrique as the Viceroy of Catalonia. This was a very powerful job. As Viceroy, Enrique was the king's representative in Catalonia. He helped manage the region for the king.
Enrique de Aragón y Pimentel lived a long life. He died on July 2, 1522, in Castelló d'Empúries. He was buried in the famous Poblet Monastery.
Family and Children
In 1488, Enrique de Aragón married Guiomar de Portugal. She was the sister of Fadrique de Portugal. Fadrique was a close advisor to King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Guiomar passed away in 1516.
Enrique and Guiomar had three children together:
- Juan de Aragón (born 1488, died 1490).
- Alfonso de Aragón y Portugal (born 1489, died 1562). Alfonso also became a very important person. He served as the Viceroy of Valencia.
- Isabel de Aragón (born 1491, died 1530). She married Íñigo López de Mendoza, 4th Duke of the Infantado in 1513.
