Eochaid mac Echdach facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eochaid mac Echdach was a king of Dál Riata, an ancient kingdom in what is now western Scotland. He ruled from 726 until 733. Eochaid was the son of another king, Eochaid mac Domangairt.

Who Was Eochaid mac Echdach?

Eochaid mac Echdach was an important leader in the 8th century. He was part of a royal family that ruled Dál Riata. This kingdom was located in a beautiful part of modern-day Scotland.

Becoming King of Dál Riata

Eochaid became king of Dál Riata in the year 726. It seems he took the throne from another ruler named Dúngal mac Selbaig. Taking power often involved challenges in those times.

Facing Rivals

Dúngal's father, Selbach mac Ferchair, tried to help his son get the throne back. In 727, Selbach fought against Eochaid's supporters. This battle happened at a place called Irros Foichnae. However, Eochaid's side won, and he kept his position as king.

Eochaid's Reign and Legacy

Eochaid ruled Dál Riata for seven years. When he died in 733, historical records still called him "king." This suggests that after defeating his rivals, his rule was strong. No one seemed to challenge him during his later years.

What Happened Next?

Eochaid's son, Áed Find, later became a king of Dál Riata himself. This shows that Eochaid's family continued to be powerful. After Eochaid, Muiredach mac Ainbcellaig took over as king. Dál Riata continued to exist as a separate kingdom for a few more years.
