Epithet Erased is an exciting American animated show made for the internet. It's packed with action and comedy! Brendan Blaber created, wrote, and helped edit the series. It first showed up on VRV on November 8, 2019. Later, it also came out on YouTube on November 22, 2019.
Story of Epithet Erased
The story of Epithet Erased happens in a cool place called Sweet Jazz City. In this city, some lucky people are born with special powers called "Epithets." An Epithet comes from just one word, but it gives its user amazing abilities! For example, an Epithet could be "Soup," "Coupon," or "Sundial."
There's a magical item called the Arsene Amulet. People say it can steal a person's Epithet. This amulet is hidden somewhere inside the Sweet Jazz Museum. One night, a group of thieves breaks into the museum. Inscribed warriors start fighting among the exhibits. Dinosaur bones crash to the floor! A little girl named Molly gets caught in the middle of all the chaos. Her Epithet is "Dumb." Will her power be enough to save her? Or will her Epithet be erased forever?
Meet the Main Characters
- Molly Blyndeff (voiced by Dani Chambers) - Molly is a 12-year-old girl who runs a toy store. She does this because her dad and sister aren't around much. During a school trip to the Sweet Jazz Museum, she falls asleep. She wakes up just as the Banzai Blasters arrive. These amateur villains want to steal the amulet. At first, Molly is shy and can't stand up for herself. But with help from Giovanni, she learns to be more confident. Her Epithet, "Dumb," lets her create a soundproof bubble. This bubble mutes everything inside and out. She can also make pain "dumb," reducing how much she or others feel it. She can even make enemies less smart and easier to trick. Molly can also make summoned objects disappear!
- Giovanni Potage (voiced by Kyle Igneczi) - Giovanni is a 19-year-old man. He led the Banzai Blasters who broke into the museum. He's a very ambitious troublemaker who tries to look cool and scary. But he often comes across as a bit silly. Even though he calls himself a villain, he has a secret soft side. He truly cares for all his minions. When he meets Molly, he helps her become more independent. She even joins him for a bit to fight Indus and Mera. His Epithet, "Soup," lets him make different kinds of soup. He mostly uses tomato basil flavor. He can turn soup into a grenade or use soup steam to fly! Also, every 13th attack he makes is extra strong. This is because 13 is his lucky number. At the end of Season 1, he leaves the Banzai Blasters. He decides to become a solo villain.
- Percival "Percy" King (voiced by Sandra Espinoza) - Percy is a young police detective. She leads the investigation into the amulet theft. She has very strict rules as a police officer. She cares a lot about order and safety. However, she speaks in a flat voice and has dry humor. This can make her seem insensitive, especially to "Mundies" (people without Epithets). Percy is skilled with a sword, which is her main weapon. Her Epithet, "Parapet," lets her build small medieval-style buildings. These buildings have different powers. Some can heal people, while others can hurt enemies. For example, wizard towers can zap enemies with electricity, and apothecaries can heal wounds.
- Mera Salamin (voiced by Lindsay Sheppard) - Mera is the main bad guy in the museum part of the story. She is very clever and pretended to work at the Sweet Jazz Museum. This helped her get closer to the amulet. She is quite aggressive and seems selfish. She will manipulate others and use sarcasm to hurt them. Mera is also pretty irresponsible. She blames the whole heist on her bodyguard, Indus. Her Epithet, "Fragile," lets her make objects so fragile they shatter. But this also makes her own body constantly hurt. She wants to steal the amulet to stop her own pain.
- Indus Tarabella (voiced by Anthony Sardinha) - Indus is Mera's loyal bodyguard and helper. He joined Mera after she came through his hometown. She challenged him to a duel and easily beat him. After that, Indus followed Mera. He wanted to learn how to be strong like her. He is a gentle giant. He has the intelligence of a child and loves dinosaurs. He is also very trusting and doesn't always think before he acts. His Epithet, "Barrier," lets him create barriers of different sizes. He can also move them around.
- Dr. Sylvester "Sylvie" Ashling (voiced by Zach Maher) - Sylvie is a 15-year-old psychologist. He studies how Epithets affect people's minds. During Molly's class trip to the museum, he overhears Indus talking about the Arsene Amulet. He decides to stay behind to find and study it. Sylvie is very dedicated to his research and his job. He spent his childhood focused on research, so he didn't have many friends. Sylvie often acts sarcastic and pushes people away. He also tends to think he's always right, which leads to many arguments. But deep down, he is actually very caring. His Epithet, "Drowsy," lets him spread a golden dust. Anyone who breathes it in falls asleep, and their dreams come true! He can also summon a herd of sheep, bring people's worst fears to life, or put himself to sleep. When he sleeps, his dream self, Dr. Beefton, comes to life and fights for him.
- Ramsey Murdoch (voiced by William Sopp) - Ramsey is introduced in the Western part of the story. He is a sneaky con artist who works in the underworld. He's on the run from a bounty hunter named Zora. He is good at tricking people to get what he wants. Usually, Ramsey is calm and relaxed, especially with customers. But if he gets into a tough spot, he becomes panicked and scared. His Epithet, "Goldbricker," lets him turn objects into solid gold and back again. He can even turn himself into gold!
- Zora Salazar (voiced by Dawn Michelle Bennett) - Zora is the main bad guy in the Western part of the story. She was first sent to catch Ramsey for stealing and faking things. Then, Bliss Ocean, another bad organization, told her to get the Arsene Amulet. She is very mean and selfish when trying to reach her goals. However, she claims she doesn't always act that way because it would get boring. She also prefers fair duels. Her Epithet, "Sundial," lets her make any process move faster or slower. This includes gravity, how things move, the sun's cycle, and even a person's lifespan! She is also a very good shooter, and guns are her main weapon.
How the Show Was Made
Brendan Blaber started writing the ideas for Epithet Erased in late 2018. He showed his ideas to VRV in October of that same year. The actual making of the show likely began between March and May of 2019. The team worked on the series until the last episode, episode 7, aired on VRV on December 20, 2019.
The idea of "Epithets" first came from Brendan's online role-playing game called Anime Campaign. He liked the idea so much that he brought many of the elements and characters from the game into Epithet Erased, with a few small changes.
Brendan Blaber shared that making Season 1 cost almost a quarter of a million dollars. Most of this money came from fans supporting the show on Patreon and from VRV.
Cool Merchandise
A plush toy of the show's main character, Molly, was released on May 9, 2020. The company Makeship made the plush. It features Molly's special bear hoodie, her backpack with reflector tape, and her non-edible hair marshmallows. To make the doll, Makeship needed about 500 pre-orders. They reached this goal in just two days, which meant the doll would definitely be made for everyone to buy!
Along with the doll, a music CD of the soundtrack and a poster for Season 1 were also released. You could find these on plasterbrain's Bandcamp and Brendan's Teespring. A fun advertisement showing Molly and Giovanni talking about the products was put on the JelloApocalypse YouTube channel.
