Her Early Life and Studies
Erica Glynn was born in 1964. Her mother, Freda Glynn, is a famous photographer. Erica's brother is the director Warwick Thornton. Her aunt, Rona Glynn, is an educator.
Erica studied drama directing in Sydney. She went to the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.
Making Films and TV Shows
Erica Glynn started her career at the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA). Her mother, Freda, helped start this group in Alice Springs.
In 2001, Erica wrote and directed a short film called Ngangkari. It was about traditional healers from the Central Desert Region. These healers are known as ngangkari.
Working at Screen Australia
In 2003, Erica started working for the Australian Film Commission. Later, from 2010 to 2014, she led the Indigenous Department at Screen Australia.
She was an executive producer for several ABC TV series. These included Redfern Now, The Gods of Wheat Street, and 8MMM Aboriginal Radio.
Writing and Directing for TV
Erica Glynn helped write Little J & Big Cuz. This is an animated children's series on ABC TV. She also co-directed Black Comedy, another ABC TV show.
In 2017, she wrote and directed In My Own Words. This documentary was about a program helping adults learn to read. It took place in Brewarrina, New South Wales. The film was shown at the Sydney Film Festival that year.
She Who Must Be Loved
Erica wrote, directed, and co-produced a full-length documentary called She Who Must Be Loved. This film was about her mother, Freda. Erica's daughter, Tanith Glynn-Maloney, also helped produce it.
The film first showed at the 2018 Adelaide Film Festival. The whole family attended this special event. It was also shown at the 2019 Sydney Film Festival. At that festival, Freda Glynn spoke to the audience. The film won the award for Best Australian Documentary at the festival.
True Colours TV Series
Erica Glynn is a co-creator, writer, and director for the 2022 drama series True Colours. This show is on SBS Television.
Awards and Recognition
In 2017, Erica Glynn received the David and Joan Williams Documentary Fellowship. This is an important award for documentary filmmakers.
