Ernest Ellis Clark was born in Derby. He loved art from a young age. After studying art, he began working at Royal Crown Derby. This famous company makes beautiful porcelain. Clark won many awards for his artistic skills.

Art, War, and Teaching

When he was in his forties, Clark served in the Royal Field Artillery. This was during the First World War. After the war, he continued his art. He also wrote a special book for his students. This book was a guide to help them design art based on plants. Clark even provided the designs in his book. He strongly believed that students should always draw directly from nature. He said, "... it cannot be too frequently urged upon students that the only right way for them is to make their own studies direct from nature."

His Legacy in Art

Three of Ernest Clark's paintings are now displayed at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. These artworks were kindly given to the museum by Alfred E. Goodey. One special painting shows Green Street in Derby. It captures the street three years before the Hippodrome Theatre was built on the left side. On the right side of the painting, you can see the College of Art. This is where Clark himself trained to become an artist.

Clark passed away in Derby in 1932, at the age of 63. His artwork is now free from copyright, meaning anyone can use or share it.
