Ernst Träger (born 29 January 1926 in Künzelsau – died 25 January 2015 in Waldbronn) was an important German judge. He served as a justice on the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany from 1977 to 1989. This court is Germany's highest court. It makes sure that laws follow the German constitution.

Life and Career
Ernst Träger was the youngest of eight children. His family ran an inn and butcher shop in Künzelsau. During World War II, from 1943 to 1946, he served in the air force. He was also a soldier. After being seriously hurt and held as a prisoner of war, he began studying law.
Education and Early Work
In 1947, Ernst Träger started studying law. He attended Ruprecht-Karls University in Heidelberg. Later, he finished his legal training in Mannheim. He worked at the Mannheim District Court. In 1954, he passed his final law exam. After that, he began working as a judge.
He first worked for the state of Baden-Württemberg. He was a judge in civil and criminal cases. These cases were heard at the Bad Säckingen Local Court. He also worked at the Waldshut Regional Court.
Moving to Federal Courts
In 1958, Ernst Träger joined the Federal Prosecutor's Office. This office handles serious crimes for the whole country. By 1963, he became a judge at the Karlsruhe Regional Court. Later, he moved to the Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court.
From 1965 to 1968, Träger worked at the Federal Constitutional Court. He was a research assistant there. This role helped him learn more about how the highest court works.
Important Legal Roles
In 1968, he returned to the Federal Prosecutor's Office. He was appointed Federal Prosecutor in 1972. In this role, he handled many important legal cases. These cases often involved serious national issues.
In 1976, he became a judge at the Federal Supreme Court. This court is another very high court in Germany. It deals with appeals from lower courts.

Ernst Träger reached the peak of his career in 1977. He was appointed a justice of the Federal Constitutional Court. He served on this important court until 1989. His work helped shape how laws were understood in Germany. He made sure that the government followed the constitution.
