How Erode District Was Formed
Before it became its own district, Erode was part of a bigger area called Coimbatore district. On September 17, 1979, it split off to become a new district. It was first known as Periyar District. Later, in 1996, its name was changed to Erode district, which is what we call it today.

Erode district covers a large area of about 5,692 square kilometers. For a while, it was the biggest district in Tamil Nadu! The official language spoken here is Tamil.
