Esk'etemc First Nation facts for kids
The Esk'etemc First Nation, also known as the Alkali Lake Indian Band, is a group of First Nations people. They are part of the Secwepemc (Shuswap) people. Their home is near Alkali Lake in the Cariboo area of British Columbia. This nation was formed when the government of British Columbia set up special areas called Indian Reserves in the 1860s. The Esk'etemc First Nation is one of a few Secwepemc groups that are not part of the larger Shuswap Nation Tribal Council or the Northern Shuswap Tribal Council.
In the Shuswap language, the people from Alkali Lake are called the Esketemc. This means "people of Esket." The Esk'etemc First Nation has never signed any treaties with other governments. This means they have not given up their claims to their traditional lands.
