About Esperança da Costa

Esperança da Costa was born in Luanda, Angola, on May 3, 1961. When she was young, as Angola was becoming an independent country, she joined youth groups. These included the Youth Movement of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (JMPLA). She was also part of the Organization of Angolan Women (OMA), which supports women's rights.

Her Scientific Journey

Esperança da Costa studied biology at Agostinho Neto University (UAN) in Angola. She finished her degree in 1985. To learn even more, she went to Lisbon, Portugal, between 1983 and 1984. There, she focused on botany, which is the study of plants.

When she returned to Luanda, she became an assistant professor of plant biology at Agostinho Neto University. By 1986, she was leading the biology department. From 1986 to 1990, she helped create the Luanda Herbarium. A herbarium is like a library for dried plant samples.

In 1990, she started her master's degree in Portugal, studying how plants grow and produce. She then continued her studies, earning a doctorate in phytoecology in 1997. Phytoecology is about how plants interact with their environment.

After finishing her studies, she came back to Angola and continued teaching at Agostinho Neto University. She became the director of the Luanda Herbarium. She also served as a vice-director for scientific matters. From 2002 to 2007, she was the vice-rector for university expansion at UAN. This meant she helped the university grow and reach more students.

Later, from 2007 to 2010, she worked for the Ministry of Higher Education. She was in charge of expanding higher education across the country. This included overseeing the building of new university campuses. From 2010 to 2020, she directed the Botany Center at UAN.
