Esperança Maria Eduardo Francisco da Costa (born 3 May 1961) is an Angolan politician, scientist, and teacher. She is currently the Vice President of Angola. She started this important job on 15 September 2022.

As Vice President, she helps the President lead the country. She was chosen as the second-in-command for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) party during the 2022 elections. When her party won, she became Vice President.

About Esperança da Costa

Esperança da Costa was born in Luanda, Angola, on 3 May 1961. When she was young, Angola was becoming independent. During this time, she joined youth groups like the Youth Movement of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (JMPLA). She also joined the Organization of Angolan Women (OMA).

Her Science Career

Esperança da Costa studied biology at Agostinho Neto University (UAN). She finished her degree in 1985. She then went to Lisbon, Portugal, to learn more about botany, which is the study of plants.

When she came back to Luanda, she became a plant biology assistant at Agostinho Neto University. In 1986, she became the head of the biology department. From 1986 to 1990, she helped create the Luanda Herbarium. A herbarium is a collection of dried plants used for scientific study.

In 1990, she went back to Portugal to study more. She earned her master's degree and then her doctorate. Her doctorate was in phytoecology, which is the study of how plants interact with their environment. She finished her studies in 1997.

After her studies, she returned to Angola and became a professor at Agostinho Neto University. She also became the director of the Luanda Herbarium. Later, she held other important roles at the university. She was a vice-director for scientific affairs. From 2002 to 2007, she was a vice-rector for university expansion. This meant she helped the university grow.

From 2007 to 2010, she worked for the Ministry of Higher Education. She helped build new university campuses across the country. From 2010 to 2020, she was the director of the UAN Botany Center.

Her Political Career

Esperança da Costa became involved in politics. In 2019, she was elected to the Central Committee of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). This is an important group within the party. In 2020, President João Lourenço chose her to be the Secretary of State of Fishing.

She ran in the 2022 Angolan general elections alongside João Lourenço. She was his running mate, meaning she would become Vice President if they won. They won the election. Esperança da Costa officially became the Vice President of Angola on 15 September 2022.
