Hurricane is a small place in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government.
This community was first known as Esperanza. But its name changed to Hurricane because of some really strong storms that hit the area.

The Story of Hurricane's Name
Early Days of Esperanza
The first post office in this area was set up in 1871. It was called the Esperanza Post Office. It stayed open until the early 1900s. In 1900, about 26 people lived there.
Why the Name Changed
Before 1900, the people living in Esperanza started calling their community "Hurricane." This happened after a powerful storm, like a hurricane, came from the Gulf of Mexico and hit the area. It was such a big event that it changed the community's name forever!
Community Changes Over Time
A church in the area, originally called New Prospect Baptist Church, was built in the 1880s. It was made of wood. In 1940, a new, stronger brick building was built for the church. At that time, its name was changed to Hurricane Baptist Church. This shows how the name "Hurricane" became a part of the community's identity.
Storms Still Visit
Even after the name change, storms continued to affect the area. On April 27, 2011, a tornado touched down near Hurricane. This was part of a very large group of tornadoes known as the 2011 Super Outbreak. Luckily, this particular tornado didn't cause any damage to the community.
