Estella Campavias (born 1918, died 1990) was a talented British artist. She was known for making beautiful sculptures and ceramic art. Her amazing glazed stoneware pieces can be seen at the famous Victoria and Albert Museum.

Estella's Early Life and Art Journey

Estella Campavias was born in Istanbul in 1918. Her family had roots in Scotland and Spain. She grew up in Turkey because her father was a diplomat, which meant she traveled a lot.

Estella taught herself how to create art. She first became well-known for her ceramic work, starting her career in 1955. Later, in the 1970s, she began to focus more on creating sculptures.

Her Amazing Sculptures

Estella Campavias created abstract sculptures. These artworks often looked like smooth, flowing figures. They seemed to be moving, even though they were made of solid materials.

Her sculptures were shown in art exhibitions in Italy, France, and the United Kingdom. Some of her famous pieces include Head (around 1980), Reclining Figure (around 1980), and La Joie de Vivre (1988). These works were even featured in a special art catalog for sale.

In 2013, some of her art that had never been seen before was displayed. This happened at the Glyndebourne Festival, where her work was shown alongside other artists like Sean Henry and Michael Craig-Martin.

A famous art critic, Roy Oppenheim, once called her "one of the most exciting sculptors of our time." A photograph of Estella Campavias, taken by Ida Kar, is kept in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery.
