Estelle Muriel Kerr was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1879. She showed an early interest in art. In Toronto, she studied with two important Canadian artists: Mary Ella Dignam and Laura Muntz Lyall.

Later, Estelle traveled to the United States for more training. She spent about two years at The New York Art Students League (NYASL) starting in 1901. She also studied for two years in Paris, France, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. During her summer breaks, she loved to sketch. She drew pictures in many European countries. These included Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Career and Contributions

Around 1913, Estelle Kerr shared an art studio in Toronto. Her studio partner was another artist named Dorothy Stevens.

During World War I (1914-1918), Estelle helped out in a special way. She drove an ambulance in France. This was a very brave job. After the war, she became well known for her art. She was especially famous for painting children. She also painted beautiful landscapes and people.

Estelle Kerr was not just a painter. She was also an art critic. This meant she wrote about art and shared her opinions. She helped start two important groups for artists. She was a founding member of the Graphics Art Club. She also helped create the Heliconian Club. These clubs supported artists and helped them connect.
