Esther Gronenborn (born in 1968 in Oldenburg, Germany) is a talented German film director and screenwriter. She is known for creating movies and TV shows. Some of her well-known films include Alaska.de (2000) and Berlin Stories [de] (2005). She also directed parts of the TV series Galileo Mystery.

Esther has filmed in many different places, from the deserts of Abu Dhabi to China. She has a lot of experience making music videos, commercials, and feature films. Her work is special because it feels real and has a unique visual style. Esther studied at the Munich Film Academy. She has been working as a writer and director since 1997. During her studies, she spent time learning in Hong Kong, China, England, and Romania.

After finishing her studies in 1997, Esther worked for two years at DORO Berlin. There, she directed music videos and web content. She became well-known for her works like Musik im Kopf and Meine kleine Schwester. In 2001, her first feature film, alaska.de, came out in cinemas. This film won her the Lola for Best Director. It also received many other awards both in Germany and internationally. Alaska.de also won the Lola for Best Editing and the Bavarian Film Award.

Throughout her career, she has directed many successful and award-winning films. These include Stadt als Beute and Ich werde nicht schweigen. More recently, her TV film Das weiße Schweigen was nominated for the German Television Award in 2022. It also received a DAFfne award for Best Editing.

Besides directing, Esther Gronenborn cares a lot about fairness in the film industry. She helped start and is on the board of Pro Quote Regie and Pro Quote Film. These groups work to make sure women directors get equal chances. She is also a member of the German and European Film Academies. Esther also loves visual art and has been creating digital photographic art for several years. Her photos show her creativity and storytelling skills. Esther Gronenborn lives with her family near Berlin.
