What is the Wally Noerenberg Hatchery?
The only permanent structure on Esther Island is the Wally Noerenberg Hatchery. This hatchery is one of the biggest salmon hatcheries in the world! It is owned and run by the Prince William Sound Aquaculture Corporation (PWSAC).
How does the hatchery help salmon?
The Wally Noerenberg Hatchery raises three different kinds of salmon: pink salmon, chum salmon, and coho salmon. These fish are grown from eggs in a safe environment. Once they are big enough, they are released into the ocean. This helps to keep the salmon population strong in Prince William Sound. The hatchery is located inside the state marine park.
