Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Etheldreda Malte (sometimes called Audrey; born around 1527-1535, died 1559) was an English lady who lived during the Tudor period. Many people believed she was the secret daughter of King Henry VIII. She was married to John Harington, who was a poet and writer.

People at the time said that King Henry VIII was her father. We don't know much about her mother, who was called Joan Dingley. She was likely from a less important noble family and didn't have strong connections at the royal court. Some even think she might have been a laundress. Henry VIII never openly said Etheldreda was his daughter. However, he did give land and homes, including St Catherine's Court, to his tailor, John Malte. This happened when Malte agreed to say Etheldreda was his own secret daughter.

Early Life and Marriage

When John Malte died in 1547, he left Etheldreda money in his will. In 1548, Etheldreda was a wealthy young woman. She became the first wife of John Harington. He was an important official at court who worked for Lord High Admiral Thomas Seymour. Etheldreda brought many properties to her marriage. These lands had once belonged to Shaftesbury Abbey. Around 1550, Etheldreda and John had a daughter named Hester (or Esther) Harington.

Life at Court

On March 18, 1554, Etheldreda Malte was one of six ladies who went with the future Queen Elizabeth to the Tower of London. Elizabeth was sent there because people thought she might have caused a rebellion. Etheldreda was also present at Elizabeth I's coronation on January 15, 1559. A coronation is a special ceremony where a new king or queen is crowned.

Later Life and Death

Etheldreda Malte died in January 1559, the same month Queen Elizabeth I was crowned. Her husband remarried very quickly, within two months of her death. Etheldreda might have died at St Catherine's Court, which was her home near Bath. She might also be buried in the church next to it. However, we cannot be sure because the church records from that time are missing.

Fictional Portrayals

Audrey, which is another name for Etheldreda, is the main character in a historical novel. This book is called Royal Inheritance and was written by Kate Emerson.
