Ethos Water is a brand of bottled water from America. Its main goal is to help children around the world get clean water. The company started in 2001. It is now owned by Starbucks.
How Ethos Water Started
The idea for Ethos Water came from a man named Peter Thum. He was working in South Africa in 2001. There, he saw many communities that did not have access to clean water. This made him want to find a way to help.
Peter Thum realized he could create a bottled water brand. This brand would help raise money and awareness. The money would go towards programs that provide safe water. He became very passionate about this idea.
In 2002, Peter Thum wrote a business plan for Ethos. He then left his job and moved to New York. He wanted to start his new company there.
Building the Company
In late 2002, Peter Thum asked his friend Jonathan Greenblatt to join him. They had gone to business school together. They officially launched Ethos Water in August 2003.
They also created an organization called "Ethos International." This group would use money from the water sales. The funds would be invested in programs that bring safe water to people.
Ethos Water's Mission
Ethos Water is a for-profit company. This means it aims to make money. However, a small part of each bottle's price goes to charity. For example, about $0.05 to $0.10 from a $1.80 bottle helps charity.
By 2009, Ethos had given over $6 million. This money came through the Starbucks Foundation. It helped support programs for water, sanitation, and hygiene education. These programs teach people how to stay healthy with clean water.
Who Makes Ethos Water?
Ethos water is made by other companies. These include PepsiCo and Safeway's Lucerne brand. Unlike some other Pepsi products, Ethos bottles do not use recycled plastic.
In 2005, Starbucks bought Ethos Water. They paid $8 million for the company. Ethos Water has also inspired other companies. One example is the Dynamo Foundation.
