The Life of Queen Etuta
Marriage to King Gentius
Before Etuta married King Gentius, she was supposed to marry his brother, Plator. However, King Gentius sadly caused Plator's death. After this, Etuta married Gentius in 169 BC.
King Gentius wanted to make sure he would become the next king of the Ardiaean Kingdom. Some old stories say he was also jealous of his brother because Plator was going to marry Etuta.
Royal Alliances and Challenges
Even though Etuta married King Gentius, it seems this marriage did not create a strong friendship between the Ardiaean Kingdom and Dardania. Because of this, King Gentius decided to make an alliance with Perseus of Macedon. This was interesting because Perseus was actually an enemy of Etuta's father, King Monunius II.
Life After Defeat
In 168 BC, King Gentius was defeated in a war. After his defeat, Etuta and other important Illyrian people were taken to Italy. Etuta and her royal family were first sent to a place called Spoletum. They were supposed to be watched there.
However, the people of Spoletum did not want to keep the royal family under watch. So, Etuta and her family were moved to another town called Iguvium. Etuta lived in Iguvium until she passed away.
Etuta is sometimes known by other names, like Etleuta or Etleva.
