Eugène Bourdon (born in 1808, died in 1884) was a clever French watchmaker and engineer. He is famous for inventing the Bourdon tube pressure gauge. This important tool helps measure how much pressure is in gases or liquids. He received a special patent for his invention in 1849.

About His Life

Eugène Bourdon was born in Paris, France, on April 8, 1808. His father was a silk merchant. From a young age, Eugène loved mechanical things and how they worked.

When he was older, his father sent him to Nuremberg, Germany, for two years to learn German. After returning to Paris, he helped his father with the family business. In 1830, his father passed away.

Eugène then worked in a shop that sold optical instruments until 1832. After that, he decided to open his very own workshop.

His Big Invention

Eugène was very good at making scientific instruments and small model steam engines. He was always looking for new ways to do things.

He wanted to find a way to measure gas pressure without using a mercury manometer. These old tools used mercury, which can be tricky to work with.

Eugène had a brilliant idea! He thought about using a special curved metal tube. This tube would bend when pressure changed. From this idea, he created the Bourdon tube pressure gauge.

He got a patent for his invention in Paris on June 18, 1849. This meant his idea was officially protected. He also allowed another workshop, run by Felix Richard, to use his invention.

His invention was a huge success! It won a gold medal at the World's Fair in 1849. Two years later, at the World's Fair in 1851, he won another award called the Council Medal. He shared this award with another inventor named Lucien Vidi.

His Final Years

Eugène Bourdon passed away on September 29, 1884. He was buried in the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
