Eula Mae Gandy Johnson (1906–2001) was an important American activist. She worked hard during the Civil Rights Movement. This was a time when many people fought for equal rights for all. Eula Johnson helped end unfair rules called Jim Crow segregation. These rules kept Black people separate from white people. She fought for change in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She worked to desegregate public beaches, schools, and restaurants. Many people called her the "Rosa Parks of Fort Lauderdale."

Eula Johnson's Fight for Equality

Eula Johnson became a leader in the fight for civil rights. She worked to make sure everyone had the same rights. She focused on ending segregation in her city.

Leading the NAACP in Fort Lauderdale

In 1959, Eula Johnson made history. She became the first woman president of the Fort Lauderdale NAACP. The NAACP is a group that works for civil rights. As president, she took legal action. She filed lawsuits against public schools. She wanted black students to have equal opportunities. She also fought against segregation in public places. This included places like drive-in theaters.

Ending Beach Segregation

One of her biggest achievements was ending segregation at Broward County beaches. In 1961, Johnson and Dr. Von D. Mizell led "wade-ins." These were protests where Black people went to "white-only" beaches. They would walk into the water together. The city of Fort Lauderdale tried to stop them. They sued Johnson, calling her a "public nuisance." But a judge did not agree with the city. The judge allowed the wade-ins to continue. Because of these efforts, Broward County beaches became desegregated in 1962. This meant people of all races could use the beaches.
