Eva Josephine Jellett was a pioneering doctor from Ireland. She made history by becoming the very first woman to graduate in medicine from Dublin University. She was born on January 6, 1868, and passed away on December 1, 1958.
Early Life and Education
Eva grew up in Dublin, Ireland. Her father, John Hewitt Jellett, was a clergyman and a brilliant mathematician. He was also the head of Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Eva's mother was Dora Charlotte Morgan.
Eva first learned from teachers called governesses at home. Later, she went to Alexandra College. She began studying medicine at the Catholic University School of Medicine in Dublin in 1897. She was one of the first women to attend medical courses there.
In 1904, something big happened: women were finally allowed to study at Trinity College Dublin! Eva quickly moved her studies there. Just one year later, in September 1905, Eva Jellett earned her medical degree. This made her the very first woman to graduate in medicine from Dublin University. Her niece, Mainie Jellett, grew up to be a famous artist.
A Doctor in India
After working briefly at the Coombe Hospital in Dublin, Eva Jellett moved to India in 1906. She joined the Dublin University Mission in a place called Hazaribagh.
By 1908, she was ready to lead a brand-new hospital. This was St Columba's Hospital for Women, and Eva was in charge. She worked hard to provide medical care for women in the area.
In 1919, Eva was promoted to a senior role. This meant she was in charge of all the female staff working for the mission in India. She stepped down from this leadership role in 1923. She returned to the hospital in 1924 and spent almost her entire career there. For one year, in 1917, she also worked at a British military hospital in Bombay.
Later Years and Passing
After retiring from her busy career, Eva Jellett moved to Switzerland for a few years. Around 1938, she settled in Gorranhaven, a village in Cornwall, England. She lived there until she passed away.
