About Eve Disher
Eve Disher was born in London, England, in 1894. She studied art at the Hornsey School of Art. This is where she learned many of her painting skills.
Her Life During World War One
During World War I, Eve Disher helped out in a special way. She worked for the London Fire Brigade. This was a very important job during wartime.
Family and Friends
When she was in her early twenties, Eve married Maurice Willson Disher. He was a well-known writer and theatre critic. Through her husband, Eve became friends with members of the Bloomsbury Group. This was a famous group of writers, artists, and thinkers. One of her close friends from this group was the artist Duncan Grant.
Eve Disher also shared an art studio with another artist, Vera Cuningham. Vera greatly influenced Eve's painting style.
Traveling and Exhibitions
Eve Disher loved to travel and explore new places. She lived for periods of time in both South Africa and Jamaica. Her travels likely inspired many of her artworks.
When she was back in Britain, Eve showed her paintings in many places. She exhibited with the Society of Women Artists. She also showed her work with the Women's International Art Club. Her art was displayed at the Mattheisen Gallery too.
In 1987, Foyles Art Gallery held a special show just for her artwork. This was called a solo exhibition.
Famous Portraits
Eve Disher was best known for her portraits. These were often painted using a type of paint called gouache. Gouache is similar to watercolor but thicker.
The National Portrait Gallery in London has one of her famous portraits. It is a painting of J.B.S. Haldane, a well-known scientist. Eve painted this portrait in 1936.
