Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ewa Maria Kubicka is a mathematician from Poland. She studies interesting topics like graph theory (which is about networks and connections) and actuarial science (which uses math to understand risks, like for insurance). She is famous for creating a new idea called the "chromatic sum" for graphs. This is a way to color parts of a network using numbers so that connected parts don't have the same number, and the total sum of these numbers is as small as possible.

Ewa Kubicka's Journey in Mathematics

Ewa Kubicka started studying mathematics in 1974 at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology in Poland. She earned her master's degree there in 1979. Later, she moved to the United States to study at Western Michigan University. In 1989, she earned two more degrees: a master's in computer science and a Ph.D. (a very advanced degree) in mathematics. Her Ph.D. research was about the "chromatic sum" and how to make computer programs work well with tree-like networks.

After that, she taught at Emory University before joining the University of Louisville in 1990. She became a full professor there in 2004. At the University of Louisville, she helps lead the program for students who want to become actuaries. She also advises students studying mathematics.

What is an Erdős Number?

Ewa Kubicka has something special called an erdős number of one. This means she has written a math paper directly with a very famous mathematician named Paul Erdős. It's a way to show how connected mathematicians are through their research collaborations!
