The Ewart Building was built in 1891. It was designed in a special style called Richardsonian Romanesque. This style uses strong, heavy stone and rounded arches. It was a popular way to build large buildings back then.
The building was made for Samuel Ewart. He owned a business that sold groceries in large amounts. This type of business is called a wholesale grocer. His family kept running the business until 1925. They also owned the building for a long time, until 1969.
