History of the Ewart Building

Early Days and Design

The Ewart Building was built in 1891. It was designed in a special style called Richardsonian Romanesque. This style uses strong, heavy stone and rounded arches. It was a popular way to build large buildings back then.

The building was made for Samuel Ewart. He owned a business that sold groceries in large amounts. This type of business is called a wholesale grocer. His family kept running the business until 1925. They also owned the building for a long time, until 1969.

Location and Special Recognition

The Ewart Building stands on a piece of land where an old fort once stood. This fort was called Fort Fayette.

Because of its history and special architecture, the Ewart Building is very important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 9, 1979. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect the building.
