Ewell Brown General Store facts for kids
The Ewell Brown General Store is a historic building in Lake Park, Georgia. It sits at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Lawrence Street, right across from the train tracks. This one-story building was built around 1890 using bricks. It has a special style called Folk Victorian, which means it mixes simple designs with some fancy details.
In the early 1900s, a brick sidewalk with a cool zigzag pattern was added outside. Inside, the store is one big room with a small, raised office area.
A Store Through Time
This building started as a drug store and a general merchandise store. It sold many different things that people needed every day. In 1892, a Dr. E. Taylor ran the store. Ewell Brown worked there, helping to make pills and assist customers.
Ewell Brown Takes Over
Ewell Brown bought the store in 1899. He and his brother, Bob, turned it into a general merchandise store. They sold dry goods (like fabric), clothing, groceries, and many other items. They even changed the store's name to "Ewell Brown, Lender in Dry Goods, Clothing, Groceries and General Merchandise."
Bob Brown took over the store completely in 1948. However, the store closed a few years later, around 1953 or 1954. This happened because a main road, US 41, was changed. This change meant fewer people passed by the store, so business slowed down.
From Storage to Museum
After closing, the building was mostly used for storage. For a short time, from 1974 to 1976, it was rented out as an antique shop.
In 1994, Bob Brown's daughter gave the building to the Lake Park Historical Society. They wanted to use it as a museum. On February 21, 1997, the Ewell Brown General Store was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historic site.
Today, the building is home to the Lake Park Museum. Inside, you can find collections of local family histories and old items. It's a great place to learn about the past of Lake Park!
