Plot Summary

The main character in Extra Credit is a 6th grade girl named Abby. She is having trouble with her school grades. To improve them and move on to junior high, Abby needs to earn extra credit. Her teacher gives her a special assignment: write letters to a pen pal in another country.

Abby's letters go to a small village in Afghanistan. The teachers there want a boy named Sadeed to write back. He knows English very well. However, the village's elder thinks it is not right for a boy and a girl to write to each other. So, Sadeed's sister, Amira, is chosen to be Abby's pen pal instead.

But there's a secret! Sadeed is actually the one writing the letters. Amira only signs them. Over time, Sadeed gets annoyed that Amira gets all the credit for his writing. He decides to send a secret letter to Abby. In this letter, he tells her that he has been the real pen pal all along.
