Félix María Serafín Sánchez de Samaniego y Zabala (born October 12, 1745 – died August 11, 1801) was a Spanish writer. He is famous for writing fables, which are short stories that teach a lesson. He lived during a time called the Spanish Enlightenment, which was a period of new ideas and learning.

About Félix María de Samaniego

Félix María de Samaniego was born and passed away in a town called Laguardia, Álava, located in the Basque Country region of Spain. He received his education in Valladolid, another city in Spain. His uncle, the Count de Peñaflorida, helped him get a job working for the government.

His Famous Fables

Samaniego's most well-known works are his Fábulas (Fables), which he wrote between 1781 and 1784. There are 157 fables in total. He originally wrote these stories for the students at a school that was started by the Biscayan Society.

At first, Samaniego said that another writer, Tomás Iriarte, was his inspiration. This shows he had read Iriarte's fables even before they were published. However, when Iriarte's fables were officially published in 1782, Samaniego became upset. This led to a big argument between the two writers, who used to be friends.

Even with the disagreements, Samaniego's fables were special because of his quiet humor and easy writing style. People really enjoyed his stories, and he became very popular. His fables are still read today because they are fun and teach important lessons.
