Therese Malfatti Anonymus
Therese Malfatti: "Für Elise" may have been written for her.

Für Elise (which means For Elise in German) is a very famous piano piece. It was written by the well-known composer Ludwig van Beethoven in 1810. The full name of the song is "Bagatelle in A minor."

No one is completely sure who the "Elise" in the title was. Some people think it might have been a woman named Therese. Beethoven wanted to marry her in 1810, but she said no.

This beautiful music for piano was not shared with the public until 1865. That was many years after Beethoven had passed away. Today, it is one of the most recognized piano pieces ever. Lots of young pianists dream of learning to play it.

What is Rondo Form?

"Für Elise" is written in a special musical structure called rondo form. Imagine a sandwich! The main part of the music, called section A, is like the bread. It appears three times.

Between these main sections, there are two different parts, B and C. These are like the fillings in the sandwich. So, the whole song follows a pattern: A B A C A.

Playing the Sections

The main section (A) is often the first part many beginner pianists learn. It has a time signature of 3/8. This means there are three eighth notes in each measure. The music flows smoothly, using arpeggios that move from one hand to the other. An arpeggio is when you play the notes of a chord one after another, instead of all at once.

The middle sections (B and C) are a bit trickier to play quickly. They include fast scales and more complex arpeggios. They also have quick notes called demisemiquavers (or 32nd notes) for the left hand.
