The F.M. Jordan House is a special old house located at 18 Laurel Street in Auburn, Maine. It was built in 1881 and is a fantastic example of the Second Empire style of architecture. This style was popular in the late 1800s.
The house was built for Francis M. Jordan, a very important person in Auburn. It was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. Today, the house has been divided into apartments where people live.
What Does the F.M. Jordan House Look Like?
The F.M. Jordan House is in a quiet neighborhood south of downtown Auburn. It is a large, two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. The house has a special roof called a mansard roof. This type of roof has four slopes, and the lower slope is steeper than the upper one. It helps create a full third floor inside the house.
A tall, three-story tower sticks out from the front of the house. It also has a mansard roof. The edges of the roof have fancy decorations like brackets and dentil molding. These are small block-like shapes.
You can also see dormers on the roof. These are windows that stick out from the roof. They have decorative designs around them. A beautiful porch stretches across the front of the house. It has rounded parts on either side of the main stairs. Even though the house is now apartments, many of its original plaster and wood decorations are still inside. There's also an old carriage house behind the main building, which has also been turned into apartments.
Who Was Francis M. Jordan?
The F.M. Jordan House was built in 1881 for Francis M. Jordan. He was a very important businessman in Auburn. Mr. Jordan was a main owner of the Auburn Aqueduct Company. This company helped bring water to the city. This was very important for putting out fires and for daily life.
Later, Francis Jordan also got involved in banking. He helped start some of the first electric companies in Auburn. His work helped the city grow and become more modern.
Who Was the Architect?
The F.M. Jordan House was one of the first projects designed by Charles Sumner Frost. He was a talented architect from Maine. After studying, he worked for a famous architectural company in Boston.
Charles Sumner Frost later became very well-known for his designs in Chicago. He designed many important buildings there. The F.M. Jordan House shows his early talent and unique style.
