Dunărea Galați was a professional football club from Galați, a city in south-east Romania. The club started in 1970 and played football until it closed down in 2014.
History of the Club
The Dunărea Galați football club was founded in 1970. It took the place of another team, Oțelul Galați, in the second league of Romanian football. Over its history, the club played for five seasons in the Liga I, which is Romania's top football league.
For a short time, Dunărea Galați was considered the main football team in the city. However, in the 1980s, Oțelul became more successful. After that, Dunărea Galați mostly played in the Liga II and Liga III (the second and third leagues).
At the end of the 2007–08 season, the team was supposed to move down to the Liga III. But another team, FCM Câmpina, left the league. This allowed Dunărea Galați to stay in the second league.
The 2009–10 season began well for the club. They made it to the Round of 32 in the Romanian Cup. This is a big knockout competition for football teams in Romania. They were eventually knocked out by CFR Cluj, who were the cup champions at the time. In the league, they finished in 11th place.
