Fadwa El Guindi was born in Egypt. She loved learning from a young age. In 1960, she earned her first degree in political science from the American University in Cairo.

Becoming an Anthropologist

Later, she moved to the United States to continue her studies. In 1972, she earned her PhD in anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. This degree helped her become an expert in studying different cultures.

Her Career and Work

Teaching and Research

Dr. El Guindi taught anthropology at several universities. From 1972 to 1981, she was a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. She also taught at the University of Southern California from 1982 to 2004. In 2006, she became a professor at Qatar University. There, she led the social services department from 2007 to 2010.

Sharing Knowledge

She also helped guide important academic journals. She was on the editorial board for Field Methods journal. She also advised Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society. These journals share new ideas and research with other experts.

Beyond the Classroom

Dr. El Guindi has also worked on films. In 1986, she directed a film called El Sebou': Egyptian Birth Ritual. This film was supported by the Smithsonian Institution, a famous museum and research center. She even appeared as an actress!
