Fair Haven, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fair Haven is a small unincorporated community located in Vernon County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

The History of Fair Haven

Fair Haven has an interesting past! It wasn't always called Fair Haven. When it was first started, it was known as "Connely's Springs." This name came from J. W. Connely, who officially mapped out the area in 1881.

A post office was opened in 1886, and it was also named Connely. A few years later, in 1890, the name of the post office and the community changed to Fairhaven. This new name came from a special place nearby: a mineral spa called Fair Haven. A mineral spa is a place where people would go to relax and use water from natural springs, which they believed had health benefits.

The post office in Fairhaven eventually closed in 1908. Even though the post office is gone, the name Fair Haven remains. Sometimes, you might also hear it called "Fair Haven Springs," which reminds us of its connection to the old mineral spa.
