Exploring Fanning's Castle
Fanning's Castle stands on King's Island. You can find it near Creagh Lane and Mary Street. It is right across from the tholsel, which was an old city hall.
The Castle's Past
A man named Dominic Fanning built this castle. He was the Mayor of Limerick around 1641. This makes the castle over 380 years old!
What the Castle Looks Like
The walls of Fanning's Castle are made from limestone blocks. These are stones cut into rough squares. The castle was once five storeys tall. Today, you can see four storeys still standing.
The windows of the castle have special shapes. They feature designs called "ogee" and "mullions." An ogee is a curved shape, and mullions are vertical bars that divide a window. The castle also had a small turret staircase. This was a small tower with stairs inside. It also had battlements on top. These were walls with gaps for defense.
