Fanny Rubio's Work

Fanny Rubio published her first book of poems, Primeros poemas, in 1966. In 1970, she won a Poetry Prize from Complutense University for her book Acribillado amor.

Working for Change

During her time in Granada, she became involved with groups working for social change. She wrote for newspapers and magazines that supported these ideas. In 1982, she decided to focus more on her writing and academic work.

She published a book of poems called Retracciones that year. In 1985, she traveled to Germany, which inspired her poetry book Dresde, published in 1990.

Writing and Research

In the late 1990s, Fanny Rubio helped organize summer courses at the Complutense University. During this time, she published several poetry books, including Reverso (1988), En re menor (1990), Urbes (1991), and Cuadrantes. She also wrote a collection of short stories called A Madrid por capricho (1988).

Her first novel, La sal del chocolate, came out in 1992. This book tells about the time when Spain was changing to a democracy, a period she experienced herself. In 1995, she published another novel, La casa del halcón. She also advised on a TV show called Esta es mi tierra, which featured famous writers.

In 1998, her novel El dios dormido was released. Many important women attended its launch event in Madrid. Her novel El hijo del aire (2001) is about people who disappeared during a difficult time in Argentina. This book was even turned into a play in 2002.

Leading the Instituto Cervantes

In May 2006, Fanny Rubio was chosen to be the director of the Instituto Cervantes in Rome, Italy. The Instituto Cervantes is an organization that promotes the Spanish language and culture around the world. She worked in this role for two years. In 2009, she received the Order of Isabella the Catholic award for her work promoting Spanish culture outside of Spain.

Supporting Historical Memory

Fanny Rubio has also been involved in efforts to remember historical events. In 2006, she spoke out about how her grandparents' graves were treated in a cemetery in Valencia. She signed a letter with other thinkers asking for help to protect a shared grave site in Valencia.

Feminism and Women in Literature

Fanny Rubio has a special way of looking at feminism. She studies how women are shown in literature and how their roles have changed over time. She explores how women in stories start to have their own voices and personalities.

For example, when the famous book Don Quixote celebrated its 400th anniversary, she led a study called "El Quijote en clave de mujeres." This study included nearly twenty essays about the role of women in the book. She once said that the author, Miguel de Cervantes, was ahead of his time and helped show freedom for women.
