Farley's was a famous British company that made food, especially for babies. They were most known for their special baby biscuits called Rusks. They also made other baby foods like rice, cereals, and breadsticks. A cute teddy bear was the brand's friendly mascot!

The Farley's brand began in the 1880s. Later, in 1994, a big food company called H. J. Heinz Company took over Farley's.

The Story of Farley's

How It All Started

Farley's Health Products Limited began in 1857. It started as a small baker's shop in Plymouth, England. Mr. Samuel Farley ran the shop, but it was his wife, Ann Farley, who actually made the famous rusks. Their first shop was at 90 Cambridge Street.

In 1862, they moved to a new place at 7 Exeter Street. Years later, in 1912, Edwin Farley sold the business. He also sold the secret recipe for Farley's rusks. He sold it to Mr. William Bolitho Trahair before moving to Canada.

Growing the Business

William Trahair was a well-known local person. He sold other products from his shop, Globe Stores, in Plymouth. In 1915, Trahair moved the bakery to 14 Notte Street. Then, in 1919, the Trahair family created a new company. They called it Farley's Infant Food Limited.

During the 1920s, the business moved again to Woolster Street. They decided to focus only on making rusks.

A New Factory and New Owners

A brand new, modern factory was built in 1931. It was located at Torr Lane, Peverell, Plymouth. The company grew very quickly after that.

In 1968, a large company called the Glaxo Group took over Farley's. Later, in 1986, Boots The Chemist Limited bought Farley's from Glaxo. The factory at Torr Lane kept making products until it closed in 1990. Today, a supermarket stands where the factory used to be.

Joining Heinz

Finally, in 1994, the company was taken over by the H. J. Heinz Company. This deal was worth a lot of money, about £94 million. Farley's became a part of Heinz, continuing its legacy of making baby food.
