Fassbrause is a special German drink. Its name means "keg soda." It's usually a non-alcoholic drink, but some types might have a little alcohol. Fassbrause is made from fruit and a special ingredient called malt extract. It was traditionally kept in a large barrel, called a keg. The first Fassbrause came from Berlin, Germany. It sometimes had spices and was a local favorite. People in Berlin even called it Sportmolle sometimes.
Fassbrause often looks like some beers because of its color. It usually tastes like apples. The flavor is a bit like the Austrian drink called Almdudler. However, Fassbrause is not as sweet. It also has a slightly less spicy taste.
In the 1950s, a different kind of Fassbrause appeared. It was called Rote Fassbrause, which means "red keg soda." This red version tasted like raspberries. It was popular in East Germany before Germany became one country again. You can still find it in some parts of eastern Germany today.
Another non-alcoholic version of Fassbrause is made in the United States. It has been around since the 1960s. This drink is known there as "Apple Beer."

How Fassbrause Was Invented
A scientist named Ludwig Scholvien created Fassbrause in 1908. He lived in Berlin, Germany. He made it for his son. He wanted to offer a drink that looked and tasted like beer but had no alcohol. Scholvien's first recipe used natural apple and licorice. These ingredients helped it taste like beer. The main parts of the drink were water and malt.
Fassbrause Around the World
A drink based on Scholvien's idea came to the United States in the 1960s. It was named Apple Beer. A company called Wild GmbH & Co. KG started making the Fassbrause mix in Spandau in 1985. Later, they sold the production to another company. Today, you can find Fassbrause on tap in Berlin. It's a special local drink. Sometimes, people even mix it with beer. This mix is called Gespritztes in Berlin.
Popular Fassbrause Brands
The Rixdorfer brand makes a lot of Fassbrause. They use water from a place called Bad Liebenwerda. They sell their drink in small bottles. Another well-known brand is Berliner Fassbrause. It is sold by a company called Spreequell. Since 2012, there has also been a Fassbrause with caffeine. It is called Kreuzbär.
