Fatima Soltan (died 1681) was an important queen who ruled the Qasim Khanate. She was the last ruler of this kingdom, from 1679 until 1681.

Who Was Fatima Soltan?

Fatima Soltan was a powerful queen who played a big role in the history of the Qasim Khanate. This was a Tatar kingdom that existed for a long time. She was known for her strength and for trying to protect her people's traditions.

Her Family and Early Life

Fatima Soltan was the daughter of a man named Agha Muhammad Shah Quli Sayyid. She married Arslanghali, who was the khan, or ruler, of the Qasim Khanate. Together, they had a son named Sayed Borhan.

Becoming a Regent

In 1627, Fatima Soltan's husband, Arslanghali Khan, passed away. Their son, Sayed Borhan, was only three years old at the time. He was too young to rule the kingdom by himself.

Because of this, the Russian Tsar Mikhail Romanov chose Fatima Soltan and her father, Agha Muhammad, to be regents. A regent is someone who rules a kingdom when the real ruler is too young or unable to do so. They ruled on behalf of young Sayed Borhan.

Facing Challenges and Resistance

Fatima Soltan was a strong leader during her time as regent. She faced many challenges from the Moscow authorities, who were part of the Russian Empire. One big issue was their attempt to make her son marry a Russian princess. Fatima Soltan did not want this to happen.

She also resisted policies that aimed to change the religion of her people. These policies promoted Christianity and were seen as unfair to Muslims in the Khanate. Fatima Soltan worked hard to protect the Muslim faith and culture of her kingdom.

The Last Queen of Qasim Khanate

Fatima Soltan continued to be a regent until 1679. In that year, her son, Sayed Borhan, decided to give up his rule. This is called abdicating.

After Borhan abdicated, Fatima Soltan briefly became the official ruler of the Qasim Khanate. She was the last queen of this kingdom. When she died in 1681, the Qasim Khanate was officially ended. It became part of the larger Russian state.
