Fatty Finn on the Big Screen
Fatty Finn was so popular that it was made into movies!
The First Film: The Kid Stakes
In 1927, a silent black and white movie called The Kid Stakes was released. A silent film means there was no talking, just music and actions! It was written and directed by Tal Ordell. This movie showed Fatty Finn and his funny goat, Hector. It even had a part where you could see Syd Nicholls drawing his famous characters. This was the very first full-length movie ever made from an Australian comic strip!
The Second Film: Fatty Finn
Later, in 1980, the comic strip was turned into another movie, also called Fatty Finn. This one was directed by Maurice Murphy. It starred Ben Oxenbould as Fatty and Rebecca Rigg. The movie earned over $1 million at the box office in Australia. This means it made a lot of money from ticket sales!
The film was also nominated for seven Australian Film Institute Awards. These are big awards for movies in Australia. It won two awards: 'Best Achievement in Costume Design' and 'Best Original Music Score'. In the same year, a writer named Bob Ellis wrote a book about the movie. It was called The Adventures of Fatty Finn and used original drawings by Syd Nicholls.
