Fauna Foundation facts for kids
The Fauna Foundation is a special place in Canada that helps chimpanzees. It's the only place in Canada that is officially recognized as a chimpanzee sanctuary. A sanctuary is a safe home where animals can live out their lives peacefully, especially after difficult experiences.
The Fauna Foundation is located near Chambly, Quebec, which is on the South Shore of Montreal. It started in 1990 when Gloria Grow and Dr. Richard Allan began caring for animals on their 150-acre farm. In 1997, their work officially became the Fauna Foundation.

What Fauna Foundation Does
The main goal of the Fauna Foundation is to rescue and care for chimpanzees. Many of these chimpanzees were used in research before they came to the sanctuary. When a research facility called LEMSIP closed down, Fauna Foundation stepped in to help these chimpanzees find a new, safe home.
Fauna Foundation was also the very first sanctuary to welcome chimpanzees who had HIV. This shows their dedication to helping all chimpanzees in need, no matter their health challenges.
Official Recognition
The Fauna Sanctuary is recognized by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. This means it meets high standards for animal care and safety. It is also a registered non-profit charity in the United States. This means it relies on donations to do its important work and doesn't make money for private owners.
A Book About the Chimps
In 2012, an author named Andrew Westoll wrote a non-fiction book called The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary. This book shares his experiences and stories about the chimpanzees living at the foundation. The book was so well-written that it won the Charles Taylor Prize.
New Arrivals
In August 2013, two chimpanzees named Loulis and Tatu moved to the Fauna Sanctuary. They came from the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute (CHCI). They found their new forever home at Fauna.
