Feeding Hong Kong (Chinese: 樂餉社; Jyutping: lok6 hoeng2 se5) is a special organization in Hong Kong called a food bank. It helps people who don't have enough to eat. They are part of a big group called The Global FoodBanking Network.

Feeding Hong Kong focuses on "food recycling." This means they save food that would otherwise be thrown away. They don't get money from the government. Instead, they rely on amazing volunteers and people who donate to help them.

How Feeding Hong Kong Started

Feeding Hong Kong began in 2011. It was started by a person named Gabrielle Kirstein. She wanted to create an independent charity to help people and reduce food waste.

Saving Food from Waste

Feeding Hong Kong works with over 400 food companies. They also partner with 150 charities. Their main goal is to collect food that is still good to eat but won't be sold. This food might be close to its "sell-by" date. It could also have small mistakes on the label or be from brands that are no longer made.

Once collected, the food is sorted. Then, it is delivered to charities like Bethune House and Pok Oi Hospital. These charities give the food to people in Hong Kong who are hungry. Each delivery is carefully planned to meet the needs of the specific charity and the people they help.

The Bread Run Program

The "Bread Run" is a special program. Twice a week, volunteers collect fresh bread and salads. These items come from stores like Pret a Manger and Maxim's Cakes. The food would normally be thrown away because it has a short shelf life.

Volunteers, called "Bread Runners," visit 1-2 stores when they close. They pick up the extra food. Then, they take it to a special drop-off point for Feeding Hong Kong. Feeding Hong Kong has big storage places in Yau Tong and Tsuen Wan. All the food collected from the Bread Run is given out the same night or early the next morning. People can sign up to be a Bread Runner online through Eventbrite.

Special Programs and Education

Feeding Hong Kong also teaches people about poverty and food problems in Hong Kong. They promote healthy eating and teach about good nutrition. They have two main programs for this: 'Chefs in the Community' and 'Edible Gardens'.

The 'Chefs in the Community' program connects expert cooks with local charities. These chefs help the charities make their food programs even better. Feeding Hong Kong also has cookbooks. These books have recipes made by top chefs and nutrition experts in Hong Kong. The recipes are easy, healthy, and don't need many ingredients or special equipment. This makes them perfect for food kitchens and people cooking on a budget. They also teach these recipes in cooking classes.

The 'Edible Garden' program helps turn unused spaces, like rooftops, into gardens. In these gardens, they grow herbs, fruits, and vegetables. This helps people get fresh food and learn about growing their own.
