Fellowship in Music, Australia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Fellowship in Music, Australia (often called FMusA) is the highest award you can earn from the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB). Think of it like the top achievement for musicians in Australia! It's a very special and respected award. The FMusA was first created in 1992. For a couple of years (2018 and 2019), it was given out as an honorary award, but now you can take an exam to earn it again.

What is the AMEB?

The AMEB is an organization that runs music examinations all over Australia. They help musicians show off their skills and get official recognition for their hard work. Earning an AMEB award, especially the FMusA, is considered a very prestigious achievement.

How Do You Earn the FMusA?

To even try for the FMusA, you first need to have earned another high-level award called the Licentiate in Music, Australia (LMusA) in the same musical subject. So, it's a step-by-step journey to the top!

The FMusA Exam

The FMusA exam is a big deal! It's usually a public recital, which means you perform in front of an audience. Three examiners watch and listen to your performance.

What to Play

You need to play a lot of music for the exam – about 80 minutes worth! Playing from memory is encouraged, and for some instruments, it's even required. You can also have a short break between your pieces.

Getting Your Grade

After your performance, you receive one of two grades: "qualified" (which means you passed!) or "not qualified."

Changes to the Exam

The FMusA has been an examinable award since 1992. However, for a short time in 2018 and 2019, it was only given as an honorary award. But don't worry, as of November 1, 2019, the AMEB brought back the FMusA as an exam you can take, with a brand new syllabus (which is like a guide for what to study and play).
