The indoor cricket school

Fenner's is a famous cricket ground in Cambridge, England. It is the home ground for the Cambridge University Cricket Club. This club is made up of students from the University of Cambridge. Fenner's is a very old and important place for cricket in England.

History of Fenner's Cricket Ground

Before Fenner's, the Cambridge University Cricket Club played at other places. These included the University Ground and Parker's Piece.

In 1846, a man named Francis Fenner had an idea. He rented an old cherry orchard from Gonville and Caius College. His plan was to build a special cricket ground there.

Just two years later, in 1848, Francis Fenner rented the ground to the Cambridge University Cricket Club. This is how Fenner's became their official home. That same year, Fenner's hosted its very first "first-class cricket" match. This is a top level of cricket played between important teams. Cambridge University played against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

By 1856, a large wooden building called a pavilion was built. It was 40 feet long and painted blue. This building is where players get ready and watch the game.

Today, Fenner's is also home to the Cambridge MCC University team. This team is a partnership between the University of Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin University, and the Marylebone Cricket Club. This partnership started in 2010.

Cool Features at Fenner's

Fenner's is not just an outdoor cricket field. It also has a special indoor cricket school. This school has three lanes where players can practice their batting and bowling, even when it's raining outside.

One of the most interesting things about Fenner's is how its grass is cut. The person who takes care of the ground, called the groundsman, was a pioneer. He was one of the first to cut the grass in strips. This creates cool patterns on the field. Now, many sports stadiums all over the world use this same technique!
